Twenty years after the end of apartheid, the South African economy is starkly divided between, so-called ‘first’ and ‘second’ economies. This common South African phraseology is a euphemism for ‘the rich’ (who do business in a certain way) and ‘the poor’ (who do business in a different way).

Worryingly, much of the country’s SME activity is locked into a subsistence paradigm, where the business supports only the financial needs of its owner, and fails to contribute to economic growth meaningfully by creating new jobs.

Job creation, the growth and sustainability of our country relies on the success of small businesses – Yet more than 80% of them fail and less than 20% truly create real employment.

One of the primary issues within the country’s SME sector is a simple lack of experience. Existing ESD (Enterprise and Supplier Development) programmes have consumed BILLIONS over a near 10-year period with very little impact. Government policy makers, government departments and local large corporations have little on-the-ground experience of the daily reality of life as a South African SME entrepreneur.

This is particularly true of the so-called second economy. As a result, SME development programmes are often hopelessly out of context, and hinder, rather than help early stage SME development.

Getting the basics right is the battle

It is fairly easy in the beginning to open business, get your first few clients and run for a couple of years. However, you then hit your ceiling, and it is a far more complicated and difficult mission to stay cash flow positive, in control and continuing to grow 5 years, or even three years down the line.

Equally, partnering with others or hiring staff with whom you do not have the same vision and values with, both in life and in business, can come back to bite a business many years after it has seemingly developed. The bottom line of growing a business is simple: when strategic growth literacy and experience is lacking, emerging small businesses stagnate and\or make mistakes that can be fatal.
